Announcement - Forum Hosting Discussion

Post by QueenLola » Sun Sep 13, 2020 4:15 am

Hello everybody and welcome back after a very sudden and uncertain couple of days [smileys/beadssmily.gif]

Our forum hosting subscription ran out and so we were automatically disconnected. Considering it's 1 year since we changed platforms and moved here, it was right on time.

For the benefit of new members and also to refresh our memories, the main reason we moved last year was to reduce/manage the cost of running the forum. In the last days of www.turkishseries.fun , the forum was relying heavily on member donations and sponsorships to accommodate our numbers. Hence the need to move to a "free" platform where membership could be open to everyone. We've been here for 1 year and have settled (are still settling) in.

As much as the idea was to move to a place that's free, there were still going to be running costs in terms of hosting subscriptions.

When we moved here, the annual hosting cost was $200. But a couple of days ago, when the forum was down, it was discovered that an annual renewal would put us closer to $500.

There are various renewal options
1. Monthly - $45
2. Quarterly (3 months) - $134.97
3. Annual - $479.88

The plan with moving here was to avoid relying on donations, but here we are again. Already, payment has been made for this month  (September into October).
A poll will be setup on this announcement where members can choose which option they  think works best going forward... basically between the annual and quarterly plans.
We're hopeful we can rely on the usual support of the amazing members of this forum in  securing donations and contributions for which ever option is agreed on with the most votes, bearing in mind that we have just 1 month to come up with the funds. All the offers of contributions that have started coming in from members are deeply appreciated thearted

Another important thing to note is that we have a database of 1195MB in our current plan. While trying to downgrade as cheaper options were considered, a 750MB database was offered but this would require a cleanup like we did in the old forum to get rid of content. This could take a lot of time hence why talks have continued for the larger database. Also, the forum is going to keep growing and generating content so a large size database will be more efficient in the long run.

This topic is open to all ideas, so please bring on what you have that we can work with.
Thank you once more and let's work together to keep this ship sailing [loveboat.gif]

P.S. The donation link will be made available soon. We've always made use of PayPal, so if you have challenges or restrictions using that, please indicate so we can consider alternatives.

P.P.S. Pending when we setup the Donations area, PayPal donations can be made to turkishshows@mail.com

So here is our Twitter account in case anything happens next time you can follow new here https://twitter.com/ourturkishforum

Thank you for these clarifications!
This forum has become an essential part of my dizi watching experience and it is hard to imagine going forward without the wonderful people I got to know here. I am willing to contribute to the yearly subscription plan which I think is the most reasonable option. The quarterly option is not only costlier, but will probably generate 4 times the overhead of work required for a yearly subscription. Paypal is fine for me.
Concerning the database, I think the larger one is the more reasonable option. This forum will continue to grow and will eventually need more space. And I don't like the idea of getting rid of old content. It's also too much work.

I was not around last year so is there a thread where the hosting options were discussed? I am an informatician by profession so I may be able to help. This is not what I do on a daily basis though and I have not worked with forums before but thought I'd ask and see if I can help.

I would like to also reiterate the idea of having a forum-independent account where the moderators can broadcast news and updates in case the forum goes down again. I would vote for Twitter because it's the simplest thing I could think of and it's public by default. So even if members do not have a Twitter account they can still follow the updates.

Also about donating, we are not asking for any big sum of money, everyone can donate as much as they are able to or feel like.

-------------------
@Işık about previous moving, you have it here in Announcements subforum. And for possible TW account, yeah that's good idea, we'll come up with that soon too.

Hi... tflower

I agree that we should shoot for an annual subscription if possible - cheaper and certainly less stressful in the long run.
Having a Forum Twitter account to keep members informed is also a good idea. I used to have email addresses I could contact years ago when the forum went down, but those are long gone now.

Hello everyone!
I'm sorry for a bit late response, but I'm in for the annual option as well.
Anything to keep this place alive, be in contact with people I'm proud to call " my freinds", all the fun, the knowledge, the tough moments and the ones you feel that someone, somewhere is thinkng of you.
Cheers to your beautiful hearts!

I do also agree for the TW account. And PayPal is fine with me.

Hey, I can definitely donate but I have a question – where is the site hosted? I'm a web developer and those numbers seem high for a site this small!

Hi, I'm using siteground. I know it's crazy expensive but when I first signed up with them it was about 195 for the one year subscription. I signed up with their GoGeek Plan as it was affordable and allowed for growth. But now with the renewal it has more than doubled. I tried downgrading but they say we have too much data and I get the following message.

THIS DOWNGRADE IS NOT POSSIBLE AT THE MOMENT.

At the moment I can not make my donation but I'm sure I'll be able to do it before the end of this month.
Is there a certain amount we donate or just what we can? I know that depends on how many people will donate but at least lets have "a no less than..." amount so we'll make sure the forum will keep going!

Thanks again for all, efforts, time, everything!💜

Where are we in terms of the collected amount? How much is left? I have not made my contribution yet and would like to know if we are still far from the goal so that I can act accordingly.

I don't think a lot has been collected yet. An update will be given next week, which is around the half mark of the 1 month deadline.

Hello Angel,

Thank you so much for the effort you are putting into this.
I have a couple of questions regarding the technical aspect:
1. The current total memory taken by the forum is 1196MB = 1.17GB? The growBig plan in the screenshot seems to allow 20GB of memory.
2. Do you have an approximate order of magnitude for the monthly visits of the forum?

Edit: regarding the first question, I found the following page that details the MySQL database limitations for each plan. Indeed, it's 500MB for the GrowBig plan.
https://www.siteground.com/kb/reduce-database-size/
